Would anyone like to be a part of focus group that discusses the Alafaya Trail widening? (I have been assigned the tasked for a project I'm doing for UCF.) I would like to ask about your attitude, opinion, and feelings about the project in regard to whether the project will improve or hinder your quality of life, i.e., you are glad you will be able to get from point A to point B faster regardless of any increased noise or air pollution; you plan to use the sidewalk improvements, regardless of more traffic.

I just want to thank you and Jason Russo for looking into the case of Buddy, the brave pitbull who defended a young girl from another attacking dog. I'm relieved that the issue is finally getting attention, and look forward to him returning to his family, and the "dangerous" label removed. Meanwhile, the guy who let his dogs attack Buddy and his child friend should be looked into.

Thank you so much, all involved, for finally taking this important start when nobody else would. It speaks volumes of your dedication to your jobs, and making sure that the best is done for everyone.

  3. Larisa Scharikin dice:

I want to take the time to say Thank You for stepping up to help with the case of Buddy the dog.It is my understanding that this issue is in fact NOT in your jurisdiction, sin embargo,, you have showed great leadership in your ability to jump in and handle the problem. Your Aide Jason Russo has done a supurb job in dealing with people and providing honest clear answers. He has also went beyond what would be expected of him and actually placed some calls on behalf of Buddy to solve some issues.my faith. We are still dissapointed in the fact that Mayor Jacobs continues to pass the buck, but are impressed with your actions to do what you can. Thank You.

    Commissioner Thompson and Jason Russo,
I want to very publicly thank you from the bottom of my heart.  Although you did not have jurisdiction or control, you did everything in your power to help Buddy!  Your follow through is flawless and your willingness to help all of us will not be forgotten!  We will be here for you at re-election time.  You have probably noticed that we are a very passionate and relentless group of "strangers" who will fight for what we believe inand I believe in you and your team.  You assisted this family and their beloved dog achieve the first crucial step in the process of clearing his name and keeping him safe.
I really don't know what else to say, except I am very proud you are a Commissioner representing this community and it is clear your aide, Jason Russo, is equally dedicated!
Please let me know if there is any way I may provide assistance to you in the future.  I would be proud to work on your campaign.
    Best regards,

  6. Wyndham Lakes Estates dice:

    Hello.

I posted a comment that was taken off this blog. We have a constant drag racing problem on most sections on Wyndham lakes BLVD. Accidents have occurred damaging property. Please help us avoid a casualty. We would like to have speed bumps placed on the road that will eliminate such activity but the county id filled with red tape and my community was told that bumps will not be placed due to road traffic. Please help make an exception. We have also asked the county to put up a stop sign at the crossroad of Wyndham lakes BLVD and the entrance of Camden Landing. There is a severe speeding issue that will cause residents of CL a rear end collision due to a blind spot. Please Help and respond to the community.

Again, please reach out to Jason.Russo@ocfl.net for an update.

  7. Renaud F dice:

    Hello again.
I wanted to bring to your attention another situation my community is having. Over the past two years drag racing has been on the rise and several areas have been damaged through collisions. Neighbors have also reported gun shots at times. Esta ha sido una batalla cuesta arriba con el condado para que los reductores de velocidad y las señales de stop en lugar de limitar / detener la actividad de tales. This activity is on Wyndham Lakes blvd  where the road is always prime spot for high speed racing. Racing often takes place in the middle of the night and by the time the police force mobilizes its often to late. Please help avoid a future fatality and get the county to remove red tape. We have also petitioned the county to have a stop sign placed at the entrance of Camden Landing and Wyndham Lakes blvd. This road is long and wide. Drivers have no respect to the speed limit. My community is at the entrance of a big neighborhood so drivers come around fast causing potential rear end collisions due to a blind spot. The county responded to our petition by doing a traffic survey and nothing has happened. Please help as my community is bigger at a fast rate. With bigger size comes bigger problems.

    1. jennthompson dice:

Jason Russo from my office is already working on this issue and has been for the bast few months. Please contact him at jason.russo @ ocfl.net so he can get your contact information and fill you in on what he is doing. Also, please send us your petition information as I do not believe it has ever made it’s way to my office.

  8. Renaud F dice:

I wanted to bring your attention to a problem that has started back up since its tax time. The famous street signs that are on the medians of the roads and nailed to county posts are coming back up. Although code enforcement has been doing a better job in some areas others need constant attention. People are posting the illegal grass signs on school properties especially Wyndham Lakes Elementary. Shouldn't the janitors or security of schools be removing those signs. Lets not forget the uprise in auto accidents due to the distracting signs people read while on the phone, respecting the speed limit, and picking up children. I understand people are looking for jobs put these signs are not keeping the community clean. Please enforce and crack down on these illegal postings. I come from Miami where the county makes it Everyones job to remove the grass signs.

    1. jennthompson dice:

I’ll send a note to code enforcement and ask them to step it up in your area.

  9. greg moore dice:

Wanted to call to your attention a problem I'm sure you are aware of – el
crosswalk at the entrance to Barber Park.  The crosswalk has caution lights
which can be activated by pedestrians, but they don't seem to help.  This
past Saturday I was turning left into the park from Gatlin and two
youngsters on bikes were attempting to cross Gatlin.  I stopped to let them
cross but the on-coming cars from Semoran just kept zooming through the
intersection.  I blinked my headlights and waved my arm but to know avail.
Finally after about ten cars there was a break and the kids could cross.
I've seen this happen many times, and with soccer season back the park is
really crowded on Saturdays so the crosswalk could get a lot of use.

I have seen in other places around town and other parts of the state a sign
which can be placed in the road reminding motorists of the state law to
stop when a pedestrian is trying to cross.  My question for you is could we
get such a sign for this very busy intersection and crosswalk?  Perhaps it
is not necessary every day but definitely on Saturdays.  I was actually
wishing we could position a police officer there to slow drivers down and
    even issue citations if necessary.

    Thank you for your time.

    1. jennthompson dice:

      Greg,
Thanks for calling my attention to this. I know the intersection very well. I’ll have my office look into it this week and see what can be done. Thanks, Jennifer

  10. Ruby dice:

    Commissioner Thompson,

I am president of The McDowell Ministries of Florida. The McDowell Ministries of Florida was founded by my late husband Shorty McDowell in 2004.
We have a Thrift Store located at 14200 E Colonial Dr. where we provide clothing and household assistance to the citizens of East Orange County. We sell all shoes and clothes for $1.  Until this year we have had no issues with Orange County but you will see this has since changed.

We received a letter from Code Enforcement Department demanding we remove our storage containers. The issue we have is we lease the property and the storage containers have been there for over 15 años. Why are we the only businesses on Colonial Dr. being harassed by Code Enforcement?  Is it because we are a religious organization and are being discriminated against? I hope this is not the case.

Driving down Colonial Dr. you will notice several businesses using these storage containers and have never purchased the proper permits and are not in violation. It was my understanding Orange County promotes the success of small businesses. How is this true when Orange County is basically causing us to close our doors? The Thrift Store receives no money from government grants and barely makes enough money to pay rent and utilities but we are being required to purchase the proper permits. To obtain the proper permits we have to pay an engineer over a thousand dollars and have site plans drawn
Please help save our store!!! We don't have the funds available to resolve the issue.

    Sincerely,
    Ruby

      Ruby,
I received your email Tuesday while we were in our all day meeting. I have forwarded to my staff and they are already looking into it. Thanks, Jennifer

  11. Stanford Woods dice:

    Jennifer,
I read an article in the conway news about the proposed 7 eleven at the corner of conway and anderson.  I first wanted to know your position on this issue and secondly would like to know more about the conway road preservation district.  I do believe that the current site is home to the first fire department in conway.  Is it possible to dig out the original landscape plans that were approved during the conway road widening project and provide the citizens with a cost breakdown showing how much money has been wasted due to the loss of plant material.  Conway Road was once a beautiful scenic drive in the early 80's.

    1. jennthompson dice:

Let me look into all of it. If the zoning is already set to allow the 7 Eleven, then there isn’t much that can be done to prevent it. It hasn’t shown up on anything that I have coming before the Board, so I’m not sure where it is in the process. I have to check into the Conway Road Preservation District. I just did some research on preservation districts and did not see it. I’d be happy to give you access to whatever documents you would like regarding cost, etc. but I’m not sure I have the manpower in my office to research waste on Conway road because of plantings. I need to check into this one to see what it would take. What is it you are looking to accomplish?

  12. Lynn McLaughlin dice:

I just read your article in the Avalon Park Post for Spring 2012 regarding speed humps on Mailer Blvd. and Lake Live Oak Drive.  While I do know that people do speed on both these roads, there are other streets  in AP that people think are racetracks too.  Like Tanja King Blvd.  If speed humps can go in one part of our neighborhood, why not all over?  Trying to cross Tanja King can be quite dangerous for elderly walking their pets or children walking to and from school.

    1. jennthompson dice:

There are requirements for putting in speed humps. Some roads do not qualify. Speed humps are also generated via citizen interest and not necessarily because of County interest. Lastly, Avalon Park does not want speed humps throughout the neighborhood. Por lo tanto, we are working directly with them on an overall traffic calming plan for the community.

    Commissioner Thompson,
We like to to know if there are any plans in the future to bring water and hydrates down Patch Rd. We noticed in the past, couple of years the county updated many areas around us with new lines and hydrants while we are still on wells, and no hydrants any where close. I've spent over $8,000.00 en 2 wells trying to get good water, only to get water that still turns our clothes brown, and the dog won't drink. We know budgets are tight, but can't we try get everyone service, even if we have to be charged a fee to tie in. Sometime in the future we know Hofner will be widened and it would be nice to send some water lines to the south off Hofner while it is being performed.
    Thanks for your service,

    Jennifer,

I was trying to possibly have some Directional signs put up along Narcoossee and Moss Park Rd.  for Northshore golf club.  Could you please guide me in the right direction on how or  if we could proceed with this.

    Please let me know

    thanks

    1. jennthompson dice:

Robbie, I’ll ask Susan to find out what it takes to get signs put up. I’m not sure the County allows those up because then we’d have to do it for everybody. But heck, I could be wrong so let me check into it.

Another day watching and hearing what should be a quite residential parkway that is Lake Underhill………over 200 cars cut through within 30 mins to go to Avalon Parkwayplease make this stop…..no one can leave their developments safely, let alone feel safe to let our elementry and middle school children walk to schoolPlease do thomthing about this trafficLake Underhill is not a highway!

    1. jennthompson dice:

Lake Underhill cannot be closed down. Long before I took office, the County allowed the development and designed Lake Underhill to do exactly what it is doing right now. There have never been plans to change it.

If you are having a problem with speeders or something like that, please let me know and I will speak with the Sheriff’s Office. Once the construction on Alafaya Trail is complete and once the construction on East Colonial gets done, possibly it will ease some of the people using Lake Underhill.

      1. Lynde dice:

Sí!…folks drive way over the posted 35 mile per hour speed limit. It used to be 30 mph.  We need stop signs or a traffic light. Many of my neighbours would like speed bumps. SInce Underhill has blind curves it seems to be enticing for drivers to speed around the curves, however these curves have roads that tee into them and we residents risk our lives while trying to leave our developments.

  16. Hi Jennifer, thank you for your service! I have had a number of the homeless ask me about the helicopters that have been flying over and sometimes hovering the homeless camp sites on the east side. Is there some kind of study going on? If it is going to benefit the homeless in some way and if I can help you just let me know. Thanks! Pastor Skip Fengfish, The Light Ministries / Word on the Street Homeless Ministries. http://www.facebook.com/wots4homeless

    1. jennthompson dice:

I’m not sure. The OCSO hasn’t said anything. I took a flyover recently to look at the 20+ camps. Skip, we’re working on this issue. I’ve called a Sunshine meeting with Commissioner Edwards and Martinez in the next few weeks to discuss. And I speak with staff weekly asking why we have resolved.

  17. Cathy Henderlite dice:

I understand that the lighting and landscaping is on hold, but what about a barrier between the roadway and the homes that line it? The temporary north side roadway is awful close to our homes! Also, the pump or compressor that runs day and night sometimes is very loud. Is there some way to muffle that noise?

    1. jennthompson dice:

      Cathy,
I do not recall a barrier being part of the plan. I will pull up the plans this week and see what’s in the budget. I will find out about the noise asap.

effort to get into my yard. The animal control has been called several times about these
dogs running loose but they do nothing. Well last evening they approched my wife and
I feel it is time something is done. The address is 4228 Kezar court Belle Isle,Fl.32812

  19. Natali Shulterbrondt dice:

I just want to comment on the blog I read in regards to the Alafaya widening project and how its affecting Stoneybrook's entrance. I would like to bring attention to how dangerous it's become for Stone Forest residents (right in front of Stoneybrook) to get out of our residence everyday. It is more dangerous from our side since we have traffic on both sides of the road. We would like something to be done in regards to these area, might a traffic light be something we could add here?

    1. jennthompson dice:

      Natali,
I’m just now seeing this post. We recently had new striping and reflectors added to the road specifically to address this issue. I’ve noticed a difference when driving the road but would be very interested in your feedback?
